Job 4:1-5:27Eliphaz's First Speech

Job.4.1-5.27
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: 2If one tries to speak a word to you, will you grow weary? But who can hold back from speaking? 3Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. 4Your words have lifted up the stumbling, and you have made firm knees that were buckling. 5But now it has come to you, and you are weary; it touches you, and you are dismayed. 6Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? 7Remember, please: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where have the upright been cut off? 8As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and those who sow trouble reap it. 9By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. 10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. 11The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. 12Now a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it. 13Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, 14fear came upon me, and trembling, and it made all my bones shake. 15Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh bristled. 16It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; a form was before my eyes. There was silence, and then I heard a voice: 17Can a mortal be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? 18Behold, he puts no trust in his servants, and he charges his angels with error. 19How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth ! 20From morning to evening they are crushed; without anyone taking notice, they perish forever. 21Is not their tent-cord pulled up within them? They die, and without wisdom.
Chapter 5
1Call now: is there anyone who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? 2For vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple. 3I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. 4His children are far from help ; they are crushed in the gate, and there is no one to deliver them. 5The hungry eat his harvest and take it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after their wealth. 6For trouble does not come out from the dust, and toil does not sprout from the ground. 7But man is born to trouble, as sparks fly upward. 8But as for me, I would seek God, and to God I would commit my cause, 9who does great things beyond searching out, wonders without number; 10who gives rain on the face of the earth and sends water on the open fields; 11who sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety; 12who frustrates the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success; 13who catches the wise in their craftiness, and the counsel of the devious is carried headlong; 14by day they meet with darkness, and at noon they grope as in the night. 15But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouth , and from the hand of the strong. 16So there is hope for the poor, and injustice shuts its mouth. 17Behold, blessed is the man whom God reproves; therefore do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. 18For he wounds, and he binds up; he crushes, and his hands heal. 19In six troubles he will deliver you, and in seven no evil will touch you. 20In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. 21You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and you will not fear destruction when it comes. 22At destruction and famine you will laugh, and you will not fear the beasts of the earth. 23For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. 24You will know that your tent is at peace, and you will inspect your dwelling and find nothing missing. 25You will know that your offspring are many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth. 26You will come to the grave in ripe old age, like a sheaf gathered up in its season. 27Behold, this we have searched out; so it is. Hear it, and you, know it for yourself.
