Job 36:1-37:24 — Elihu's Fourth Speech
Job.36.1-37.24
1Then Elihu continued: 2Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I still have words on God's behalf. 3I will bring my knowledge from afar, and I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. 4For truly my words are not false; one perfect in knowledge is before you. 5Look, God is mighty and does not despise anyone; he is mighty in strength of understanding. 6He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives justice to the afflicted. 7He does not take his eyes off the righteous, but seats them with kings on the throne forever, and they are exalted. 8But if they are bound in chains and caught in cords of affliction, 9then he declares to them their deeds and their transgressions, that they have acted proudly. 10He opens their ears to discipline and tells them to turn back from iniquity. 11If they listen and serve him, they will finish their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness. 12But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword, and they will die without knowledge. 13But the godless in heart store up anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. 14They die in youth, and their life ends among the cult prostitutes . 15He rescues the afflicted through their affliction and opens their ears through oppression. 16Indeed, he was drawing you out of the mouth of distress into a broad place where there is no constraint, and what was set on your table was full of rich food. 17But you are full of the judgment of the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you. 18For let not wrath entice you into mockery, and let not the greatness of a ransom turn you aside. 19Will your cry avail, so that you are not in distress, or all the exertions of your strength? 20Do not long for the night, when peoples are taken away from their place. 21Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. 22Look, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? 23Who has appointed his way for him, or who has said, 'You have done wrong'? 24Remember to magnify his work, which people have sung of. 25All humanity has seen it; mortals behold it from afar. 26Look, God is great, and we do not know him; the number of his years is unsearchable. 27For he draws up drops of water; they distill rain from his mist. 28which the clouds pour down and shower abundantly on humanity. 29Can anyone understand the spreadings of the clouds, the thunderings of his covering ? 30See, he spreads his light around him and covers the roots of the sea. 31For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. 32He covers the light in his hands and commands it to strike its mark. 33His thunder declares him; even the cattle tell that a storm is rising.
Chapter 37
1At this also my heart trembles and leaps from its place. 2Listen closely to the thunder of his voice and the rumbling that comes from his mouth. 3Under the whole sky he sends it out, and his lightning to the ends of the earth. 4After it a voice roars; he thunders with his majestic voice, and he does not hold them back when his voice is heard. 5God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we do not know. 6For he says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,' and to the rain shower, 'Be a shower,' and to the downpours of his mighty rain. 7He seals the hand of every person, so that all people may know his work. 8Then the wild animal goes into its lair and remains in its den. 9From its chamber comes the storm, and from the scattering winds the cold. 10By the breath of God ice is formed, and the broad waters are frozen tight. 11Also with moisture he loads the cloud; he scatters his cloud of lightning. 12And it turns about by his guidance, to do all that he commands across the face of the inhabited earth. 13Whether for a rod, or for his land, or for covenant love, he causes it to happen. 14Listen to this, Job; stand still and consider the wonders of God. 15Do you know how God sets these things in place, or makes the lightning of his cloud shine? 16Do you know the balancing of the clouds, the wonders of one perfect in knowledge? 17You whose garments grow hot when the land lies still under the south wind, 18Can you, with him, spread out the skies, hard as a cast metal mirror? 19Teach us what we should say to him; we cannot arrange our words because of darkness. 20Should it be told him that I would speak? If a person said so, would he be swallowed up? 21And now they do not see the light, though it is bright in the skies; but the wind passes and clears them. 22From the north comes golden splendor; upon God is awesome majesty. 23The Almighty—we cannot reach him. He is great in power, and in justice and abundance of righteousness he does not oppress. 24Therefore people fear him; he does not regard any who are wise of heart . Translation Notes
