Job 23:1-24:25 — Job's Reply to Eliphaz
Job.23.1-24.25
1Then Job answered and said: 2Even today my complaint is bitter; His hand is heavy despite my groaning. 3Oh, that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come to His dwelling! 4I would lay out my case before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments. 5I would know the words with which He would answer me, and understand what He would say to me. 6Would He contend with me in the greatness of His power? No, He would surely pay attention to me. 7There an upright man could reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge. 8Behold, I go east, but He is not there; and west, but I cannot perceive Him. 9When He works in the north, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the south, I cannot see Him. 10But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. 11My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and have not turned aside. 12I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my allotted portion. 13But He is unchangeable, and who can turn Him back? What His soul desires, He does. 14For He will complete what He has decreed for me, and many such things are in His mind. 15Therefore I am terrified at His presence; when I consider this, I am afraid of Him. 16God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. 17Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, nor by the thick darkness that covers my face.
Chapter 24
1Why are times for judgment not reserved by the Almighty? And why do those who know Him not see His days? 2People move boundary stones to steal land; they violently take away flocks and pasture them. 3They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; they take the widow's ox as a pledge for debt. 4They push the needy off the road; the poor of the land are forced to hide themselves together. 5Behold, like wild donkeys in the wilderness, the poor go out to their work, foraging diligently for food; the desert yields food for their children. 6They gather fodder in the field, and they glean the vineyard of the wicked. 7They spend the night naked, without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. 8They are drenched by the mountain rains, and they embrace the rock for lack of shelter. 9There are those who snatch the fatherless infant from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor. 10So the poor go about naked, without clothing; though hungry, they carry the sheaves. 11They press out oil between the terrace walls of the wicked; they tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst. 12From the city, dying men groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out for help; yet God charges no one with wrongdoing. 13There are those who rebel against the light; they do not know its ways, nor do they stay on its paths. 14At dawn the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy, and in the night he acts like a thief. 15The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, 'No eye will see me'; and he disguises his face. 16In the dark they dig through the walls of houses; by day they shut themselves in; they do not know the light. 17For deep darkness is morning to all of them; for they are friends with the terrors of deep darkness. 18They are swift on the surface of the waters; their portion in the land is cursed; no one turns toward their vineyards. 19As drought and heat consume the snow waters, so Sheol consumes those who have sinned. 20The womb forgets them; the worm feeds sweetly on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is broken like a tree. 21They prey on the barren woman who has no child, and show no kindness to the widow. 22Yet God drags away the mighty by His power; though they rise up, they have no assurance of life. 23He gives them security, and they are supported, but His eyes are upon their ways. 24They are exalted for a little while, and then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others, and they are cut off like the heads of grain. 25If it is not so , who will prove me a liar, and reduce my words to nothingness?
