Job 18:1-21 — Bildad's Second Speech

Job.18.1-21

¹Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: ²How long will you all keep on with words? Understand, and afterward we will speak. ³Why are we counted like cattle? Why are we regarded as unclean in your eyes? ⁴You who tear yourself apart in anger—shall the earth be abandoned for your sake, or the rock be moved from its place? ⁵Indeed, the light of the wicked is extinguished, and the spark of his fire does not shine. ⁶The light in his tent grows dark, and his lamp above him is extinguished. ⁷His strong steps are shortened, and his own counsel throws him down. ⁸For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks over its mesh. ⁹A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast. ¹⁰A cord for him is hidden in the ground, and a trap for him lies on the path. ¹¹Terrors frighten him on every side and drive him off at every step. ¹²His vigor is famished, and disaster stands ready at his side. ¹³It devours the parts of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs. ¹⁴He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors . ¹⁵What is not his dwells in his tent; sulfur is scattered over his dwelling. ¹⁶Below, his roots dry up, and above, his branches are cut off. ¹⁷His memory perishes from the earth, and no name remains for him in the open places. ¹⁸He is driven from light into darkness, and banished from the world. ¹⁹He has no offspring and no descendant among his people, and no survivor where he once lived. ²⁰Those who come after are appalled at his day, and those who went before are seized with horror. ²¹Surely these are the dwellings of the evildoer, and this is the place of one who does not know God.
