1 Chronicles 19:1-19 — The Battle Against Ammon and Aram
1Chr.19.1-19
1Some time later, Nahash the king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his place. 2David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came to the land of the Ammonites to Hanun, to comfort him. 3But the commanders of the Ammonites said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?” 4So Hanun took David's servants, shaved them, cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away. 5Then some went and told David about the men, and he sent messengers to meet them, because the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.” 6When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah. 7So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, along with the king of Maacah and his people, who came and camped near Medeba. And the Ammonites gathered together from their cities and came out for battle. 8When David heard of it, he sent Joab and the entire army of the mighty men. 9The Ammonites marched out and arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance of the city, while the kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open field. 10When Joab saw that the battle lines were set against him both in front and in back, he chose some of the best young men in Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans. 11He placed the rest of the troops under the command of his brother Abishai, and they arrayed themselves against the Ammonites. 12He said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you will come to my rescue; and if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you. 13Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. And may Yahweh do what is good in His eyes." 14So Joab and the troops who were with him advanced to battle against the Arameans, and they fled before him. 15When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before his brother Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem. 16When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Arameans who were from beyond the River , with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. 17When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, advanced toward them, and arrayed his forces against them. When David set up his battle lines against the Arameans, they fought against him. 18But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand Aramean charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also put to death Shophach the commander of the army. 19When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. And the Arameans refused to help the Ammonites anymore.
