1 Chronicles 10:1-14 — The Death of Saul

1Chr.10.1-14

¹Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the soldiers of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. ²The Philistines pursued closely after Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. ³The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers overtook him, and he was wounded by the archers. ⁴Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was unwilling, for he was terrified. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. ⁵When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died. ⁶So Saul died, along with his three sons, and his entire family died together. ⁷When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and settled in them. ⁸Now it happened on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain of their valuables , they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. ⁹They stripped him, took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines all around, to proclaim the news to their idols and to the people. ¹⁰They put his armor in the temple of their gods, and they fastened his head in the temple of Dagon . ¹¹When all Jabesh-gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul, ¹²all the valiant men arose and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons. They brought them to Jabesh, buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days as an act of mourning. ¹³So Saul died because of his unfaithfulness, which he committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance, ¹⁴and did not inquire of the LORD . Therefore, the LORD put him to death and turned the kingship over to David the son of Jesse.
