Jeremiah 9:1-26Jeremiah's Lament

Jer.9.1-26
1If only I had in the wilderness a lodging place for travelers, that I might leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous people. 2They bend their tongue like a bow for falsehood; they have grown strong in the land, but not for truth. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know Me, declares the LORD. 3Let everyone beware of his neighbor, and do not trust any brother; for every brother will utterly deceive , and every neighbor goes about slandering. 4Everyone deceives his neighbor, and they do not speak the truth; they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves committing iniquity. 5Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know Me, declares the LORD. 6Therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts: Behold, I will refine them and test them; for what else can I do because of the daughter of My people? 7Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit. With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, but within himself he sets an ambush. 8Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the LORD. Shall I not avenge Myself on a nation such as this? 9I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains, and a lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness, because they are scorched so that no one passes through, and the sound of livestock is not heard. Both the birds of the sky and the beasts have fled; they have gone away. 10I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a lair of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant. 11Who is the wise man, that he may understand this? And to whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined and scorched like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? 12And the LORD says: Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice, nor walked in it, 13but have walked after the stubbornness of their heart, and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them. 14Therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood, and give them poisoned water to drink. 15I will scatter them among the nations whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them. 16Thus says the LORD of Hosts: Consider, and call for the mourning women , that they may come; and send for the skillful women, that they may come. 17Let them make haste and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush with water. 18For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion: 'How we are ruined! We are greatly ashamed, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.' 19Now hear the word of the LORD, O women, and let your ear receive the word of His mouth; teach your daughters wailing, and each woman her neighbor a lamentation. 20For death has come up through our windows; it has entered our palaces, to cut off the children from the outside, and the young men from the town squares. 21Speak, 'Thus declares the LORD: The corpses of men will fall like dung on the open field, and like a sheaf behind the reaper, with no one to gather them.' 22Thus says the LORD: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast in his might; let not the rich man boast in his riches. 23But let him who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving devotion, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for in these things I delight, declares the LORD. 24Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh : 25Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all who clip the hair of their temples , who dwell in the wilderness; 26for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart .
