Jeremiah 14:1-22Drought, Famine, Sword

Jer.14.1-22
1The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: 2"Judah mourns, and her gates languish; they bow in mourning to the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up. 3Their nobles send their servants for water; they come to the cisterns, but find no water. They return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed and humiliated, and they cover their heads. 4Because the ground is cracked, for there has been no rain in the land, the farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads. 5Even the doe in the field gives birth and abandons her young, because there is no grass. 6The wild donkeys stand on the barren heights; they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation." 7"Although our iniquities testify against us, O LORD, act for the sake of Your name; for our rebellions are many; we have sinned against You. 8O Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of distress, why should You be like a foreigner in the land, and like a traveler who turns aside only to lodge for the night? 9Why should You be like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior who cannot save? Yet You are in our midst, O LORD, and we are called by Your name; do not forsake us!" 10This is what the LORD says concerning this people: “Truly they have loved to wander; they have not restrained their feet. Therefore the LORD does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.” 11Then the LORD said to me, "Do not pray for the well-being of this people. 12Even when they fast, I will not listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them by the sword, by famine, and by plague." 13Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, the prophets are telling them, 'You will not see the sword, nor will you suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.'” 14And the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in My name. I did not send them, nor did I command them, nor did I speak to them. They are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, worthlessness, and the deceit of their own minds. 15Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in My name, though I did not send them, and who say, 'Sword and famine will not be in this land': By sword and famine those very prophets will be consumed! 16And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. There will be no one to bury them—neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters. For I will pour out their own wickedness upon them. 17"You shall speak this word to them: 'Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people has been shattered with a crushing blow, with a severely grievous wound. 18If I go out into the field, behold, those slain by the sword! And if I enter the city, behold, those ravaged by famine! For both prophet and priest wander to a land they do not know.'" 19Have You completely rejected Judah? Does Your soul loathe Zion? Why have You struck us down so that there is no healing for us? We hoped for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, but behold, terror! 20We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against You. 21Do not spurn us, for the sake of Your name; do not disgrace Your glorious throne. Remember, and do not break Your covenant with us. 22Can any of the vanities of the nations cause rain? Or can the skies themselves give showers ? Is it not You, O LORD our God? Therefore we put our hope in You, for You have made all these things.
