Jeremiah 43:1-13 — Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
Jer.43.1-13
1Now it came about, when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them—all these words— 2that Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are speaking a lie! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, 'You shall not go to Egypt to reside there.' 3Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, in order to hand us over to the Chaldeans, to put us to death or to exile us to Babylon." 4So Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces, and all the people did not obey the voice of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah. 5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been scattered to reside in the land of Judah— 6the men, the women, the children, the king's daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah. 7They entered the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they arrived as far as Tahpanhes. 8Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying: 9"Take large stones in your hand, and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork that is at the entrance of Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah. 10Then say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send for and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11'He will come and strike the land of Egypt: those destined for death, to death; and those destined for captivity, to captivity; and those destined for the sword, to the sword. 12'I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. He will wrap himself in the land of Egypt just as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there in peace. 13'He will shatter the sacred pillars of Beth Shemesh , which is in the land of Egypt, and he will burn the temples of the gods of Egypt with fire.'"
