Jeremiah 49:1-39Messages About Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar, Elam

Jer.49.1-39
1Concerning the sons of Ammon. Thus says Yahweh: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Malcam taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its cities? 2Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares Yahweh, when I will cause the battle cry to be heard against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; and it will become a desolate mound, and its villages will be burned with fire. Then Israel will dispossess those who dispossessed him, says Yahweh. 3Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is destroyed! Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament, and run back and forth among the walls; for Malcam will go into exile, his priests and his officials together. 4Why do you boast of your valleys, your flowing valley, O faithless daughter, who trusts in her treasures, saying, 'Who will come against me?' 5Behold, I am bringing terror upon you, declares the Lord Yahweh of hosts, from all those around you. And you will be driven out, each man straight ahead, and there will be no one to gather the fugitives. 6But afterward I will restore the sons of Ammon from captivity," declares Yahweh. 7Concerning Edom. Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed? 8Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the disaster of Esau upon him at the time I punish him. 9If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only until they had enough? 10But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he will not be able to conceal himself. His offspring are destroyed, along with his brothers and his neighbors, and he is no more. 11Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive. And let your widows trust in me." 12For thus says Yahweh: "Behold, those whose judgment was not to drink the cup will certainly drink it, and will you go completely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must certainly drink it. 13For I have sworn by myself, declares Yahweh, that Bozrah will become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins." 14I have heard a report from Yahweh, and an envoy is sent among the nations: “Gather yourselves together and come against her, and rise up for battle!” 15"For behold, I will make you small among the nations, despised among men. 16The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle's, I will bring you down from there," declares Yahweh. 17"Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will hiss at all its wounds. 18As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities,“ says Yahweh, ”no man will dwell there, nor will any son of man reside in it. 19Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennial pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me? Who will summon me? And what shepherd can stand before me?" 20Therefore hear the counsel of Yahweh, which he has counseled against Edom, and his plans, which he has planned against the inhabitants of Teman : Surely they will drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he will make their pasture desolate because of them. 21At the sound of their fall the earth trembles; there is a cry, the sound of which is heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, one will mount up and swoop down like an eagle, and spread his wings against Bozrah; and the heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor. 23Concerning Damascus. "Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad report; they melt away in fear. There is anxiety in the sea; it cannot be calmed. 24Damascus has become feeble, she turns to flee, and panic has seized her; anguish and pangs have taken hold of her, like a woman in labor. 25How is the city of praise not forsaken, the town of my joy? 26Therefore her young men will fall in her squares, and all the men of war will be silenced in that day," declares Yahweh of hosts. 27“And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.” 28Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated. Thus says Yahweh: "Rise up, advance against Kedar, and destroy the sons of the east! 29Their tents and their flocks will be taken; their tent curtains, all their goods, and their camels will be carried away for themselves, and they will cry out to them, 'Terror on every side!' 30Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Hazor,“ declares Yahweh. ”For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has counseled a counsel against you, and has planned a plan against you. 31Rise up, advance against a nation at ease, that dwells securely,“ declares Yahweh; ”it has no gates or bars; they dwell alone. 32Their camels will become plunder, and the multitude of their livestock a spoil. I will scatter to every wind those who shave the corners of their hair, and I will bring their disaster from every side," declares Yahweh. 33“Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever. No man will dwell there, nor will any son of man reside in it.” 34The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying: 35Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. 36And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four corners of the heavens, and I will scatter them to all these winds; and there will be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam will not go. 37I will shatter Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life; and I will bring disaster upon them, even my fierce anger,“ declares Yahweh. ”And I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them. 38And I will set my throne in Elam, and I will destroy from there king and officials," declares Yahweh. 39“But it will happen in later days that I will restore Elam from captivity,” declares Yahweh.
