1 Kings 19:1-21 — Elijah Flees to Horeb
1Kgs.19.1-21
1Now Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me, and even more, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like the life of one of them!” 3When he saw this, he arose and ran for his life. He came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. He asked that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, O LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6He looked, and behold, there by his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the LORD returned a second time and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. 9He came to a cave there and spent the night there. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10He said, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 11Then He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD was passing by! A great and strong wind was tearing apart the mountains and shattering the boulders before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a gentle, quiet voice. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak, went out, and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14He said, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 15Then the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16You shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17And it shall come to pass that the one who escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and the one who escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel—all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." 19So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak upon him. 20Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back, for what have I done to you?” 21So Elisha turned back from him, took the pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. Using the wooden equipment of the oxen as fuel , he boiled their meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, followed Elijah, and served him.
