1 Kings 9:1-28The Lord Appears to Solomon; Solomon's Other Activities

1Kgs.9.1-28
1When Solomon had finished building the house of the LORD and the king's house, and all that Solomon desired to do, 2the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3And the LORD said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea that you made before me. I have consecrated this house that you built, to put my name there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be there always. 4And as for you, if you walk before me as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing all that I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and my judgments, 5then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall never lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ 6But if you indeed turn away, you or your sons, from following me, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and bow down to them, 7then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and the house that I consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight; and Israel will become a proverb and a taunt among all peoples. 8And this house, exalted as it is, everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will hiss and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?’ 9And they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods and bowed down to them and served them; therefore the LORD has brought all this disaster upon them.’” 10At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the LORD and the king's house, 11Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar timber, cypress timber, and gold, according to all his desire; then King Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12But when Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, they were not pleasing to him. 13And he said, “What are these cities that you have given me, my brother?” So he called them the land of Cabul to this day. 14And Hiram sent the king one hundred twenty talents of gold. 15Now this is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon raised to build the house of the LORD, his own house, the Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. 16Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and had killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and had given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife. 17So Solomon built Gezer and Lower Beth-horon, 18and Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land, 19and all the store cities that Solomon had, and the cities for chariots, and the cities for horsemen, and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion. 20As for all the people who remained of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel— 21their descendants who remained after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were unable to devote to destruction—these Solomon conscripted as forced laborers to this day. 22But from the children of Israel Solomon made no slaves, for they were men of war, his servants, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and his horsemen. 23These were the chief officers over Solomon’s work: five hundred fifty, who directed the people doing the work. 24But Pharaoh’s daughter came up from the city of David to her house that Solomon had built for her; then he built the Millo. 25Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar that he had built for the LORD, and he burned incense with them before the LORD. So he completed the house. 26King Solomon also built a fleet at Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27And Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who knew the sea, along with Solomon’s servants. 28They came to Ophir and took from there four hundred twenty talents of gold, and brought it to King Solomon.
