1 Kings 5:1-18 — Preparations for Building the Temple
1Kgs.5.1-18
1Solomon was ruling over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life. 2Solomon's provision for one day was thirty cors of fine flour and sixty cors of meal, 3ten fattened cattle, twenty pasture-fed cattle, and a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened poultry. 4For he had dominion over the entire region west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the River; and he had peace on all sides around him. 5Judah and Israel lived in safety, each man under his vine and under his fig tree , from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. 6Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 7Those deputies provided food for King Solomon and for all who approached King Solomon's table, each in his month; they let nothing be lacking. 8They also brought barley and straw for the horses and the swift steeds to the place where they were needed, each according to his requirement. 9God gave Solomon wisdom and very great understanding, and breadth of mind like the sand that is on the seashore. 10Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. 11For he was wiser than all men—than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. 12He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. 13He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. 14People came from all nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom. 15Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, because he had heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father; for Hiram had always been a friend to David. 16And Solomon sent word to Hiram, saying: 17"You know that David my father could not build a house for the name of the LORD his God because of the warfare that surrounded him, until the LORD put them under the soles of my feet . 18But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side; there is no adversary and no evil misfortune."
