1 Corinthians 10:1-22 — Warnings from Israel's History
1Cor.10.1-22
1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea. 2And all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3And all ate the same spiritual food. 4And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they were drinking from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for their bodies were laid low in the wilderness. 6Now these things became examples for us, so that we would not desire evil things as they did. 7Do not become idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.” 8Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9Neither let us put the Lord to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10Neither grumble, as some of them grumbled, and perished by the destroyer. 11Now these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our warning, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12Therefore, the one who thinks he stands must watch out lest he fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to endure it. 14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to wise people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18Consider Israel according to the flesh: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19What then am I saying? That food sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything? 20No, but that what they sacrifice , they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become participants with demons. 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons. 22Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Surely we are not stronger than he, are we?
