Joshua 23:1-16 — Joshua's Farewell to the Leaders

Josh.23.1-16

¹After many days, after Yahweh had given Israel rest from all their enemies on every side, Joshua was old, advanced in years. ²So Joshua called for all Israel, for its elders, its heads, its judges, and its officers, and said to them, “I am old, advanced in years.” ³"You have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations before you, for Yahweh your God is the one who has fought for you. ⁴See, I have allotted to your tribes as an inheritance these remaining nations, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I cut off, as far as the Great Sea toward the sunset. ⁵Yahweh your God himself will thrust them out from before you and dispossess them before you, and you shall possess their land, just as Yahweh your God spoke to you. ⁶Therefore be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left, ⁷so that you do not go among these nations, these that remain with you, and do not mention the names of their gods or make anyone swear by them, and do not serve them or bow down to them. ⁸But you shall cling to Yahweh your God, as you have done to this day. ⁹Yahweh has dispossessed great and powerful nations before you; but as for you, no one has stood before you to this day. ¹⁰One man of you puts a thousand to flight, because Yahweh your God is the one who fights for you, just as he spoke to you. ¹¹So guard yourselves very carefully, to love Yahweh your God. ¹²For if you ever turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations, these that remain with you, and intermarry with them, and you join them and they join you, ¹³know for certain that Yahweh your God will no longer dispossess these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a snare and a trap, a lash on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that Yahweh your God has given you. ¹⁴"Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth , and you know with all your heart and with all your soul that not one thing has failed of all the good things that Yahweh your God spoke concerning you. All of them have come to you; not one thing of them has failed. ¹⁵And it shall happen that just as every good thing that Yahweh your God spoke to you has come upon you, so also Yahweh will bring upon you every harmful thing, until he has destroyed you from this good land that Yahweh your God has given you, ¹⁶if you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God that he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of Yahweh will blaze against you , and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given you."
