Joshua 2:1-24 — Rahab and the Spies
Josh.2.1-24
1Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from Shittim , saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a woman, a prostitute named Rahab, and stayed there. 2And it was reported to the king of Jericho: “Look, men from the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3So the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who came to you, who entered your house, for they have come to spy out the whole land.” 4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5And when it was time to shut the gate in the dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them." 6(But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax that she had arranged on the roof.) 7So the men pursued them along the road to the Jordan, up to the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out after them. 8Before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9and said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are melting in fear before you. 10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11When we heard it, our hearts melted, and no courage remained in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, since I have shown you kindness, you also will show kindness to my father's house, and give me a reliable sign 13that you will keep alive my father and my mother, my brothers and my sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." 14The men said to her, “Our lives for yours, even to death! If you do not report this business of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land, we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” 15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, and she lived on the wall. 16She said to them, “Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not encounter you. Hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers have returned; afterward, you may go on your way.” 17The men said to her, "We will be free from this oath of yours that you made us swear, 18unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and you gather your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household to yourself into the house. 19If anyone goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head. 20And if you report this business of ours, then we will be free from your oath that you made us swear." 21She said, “According to your words, let it be so.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22They went and came to the hill country, and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers searched all along the road but did not find them. 23Then the two men returned, came down from the hill country, crossed over, and came to Joshua son of Nun. They reported to him all that had happened to them. 24And they said to Joshua, “The LORD has surely delivered the whole land into our hands , and moreover, all the inhabitants of the land are melting in fear before us.”
