Joshua 11:1-23 — Conquest of Northern Canaan
Josh.11.1-23
1When Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2and to the kings who were in the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and on the slopes of Dor to the west; 3to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, and to the Hivites below Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4They came out, they and all their armies with them, a people as numerous as the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. 5All these kings joined forces, and they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel. 6Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I will hand all of them over slain before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” 7So Joshua and all the fighting men with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. 8Yahweh gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them down and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, Misrephoth-maim, and the Valley of Mizpeh to the east. They struck them down until they left none of them remaining. 9Joshua did to them just as Yahweh had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire. 10At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, and he struck its king with the sword, for Hazor had formerly been the head of all these kingdoms. 11They struck down every person in it with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction. Not one breathing thing was left, and he burned Hazor with fire. 12Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, along with all their kings, and struck them with the edge of the sword. He devoted them to destruction, just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded. 13But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds , except Hazor alone; Joshua burned that one. 14The Israelites took for themselves all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, but they struck every person with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them. They left not one breathing thing. 15Just as Yahweh had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh had commanded Moses. 16So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its lowland, 17from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death. 18Joshua waged war with all these kings for a long time. 19There was not a city that made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who lived in Gibeon; they took all the others in battle. 20For it was from Yahweh to harden their hearts to come against Israel in battle, so that he might devote them to destruction, so that no mercy would be shown them , but in order to destroy them, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 21At that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the hill country—from Hebron, Debir, Anab, from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction along with their cities. 22No Anakim remained in the land of the Israelites; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did some remain. 23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it to Israel as an inheritance according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.
