2 Chronicles 35:1-27 — Josiah Celebrates the Passover; His Death

2Chr.35.1-27

¹Josiah celebrated a Passover to Yahweh in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the first month . ²He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of the house of Yahweh. ³He said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to Yahweh, "Put the holy ark in the house that Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, built. It will no longer be a burden on your shoulders. Now serve Yahweh your God and his people Israel. ⁴Prepare yourselves by your fathers' houses according to your divisions, following the written instruction of David king of Israel and the written instruction of Solomon his son. ⁵Stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the fathers' houses of your brothers, the lay people, and let there be a portion of a father's house for the Levites. ⁶Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves, and prepare for your brothers, to do according to the word of Yahweh by the hand of Moses." ⁷Josiah contributed to the lay people flocks of lambs and young goats, all for the Passover offerings for everyone who was present, numbering thirty thousand, and three thousand bulls; these were from the king's possessions. ⁸His officials also contributed willingly to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the chief officers of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings two thousand six hundred lambs and goats, and three hundred bulls. ⁹Conaniah, along with Shemaiah and Nethanel his brothers, and Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, the commanders of the Levites, contributed to the Levites for the Passover offerings five thousand lambs and goats, and five hundred bulls. ¹⁰So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their places, and the Levites in their divisions, according to the king's command. ¹¹They slaughtered the Passover lambs, and the priests sprinkled the blood handed to them, while the Levites flayed the animals. ¹²They set aside the burnt offerings to distribute them to the divisions of the fathers' houses of the lay people, to offer to Yahweh, as it is written in the book of Moses. And they did the same with the bulls. ¹³They roasted the Passover lambs with fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the holy offerings in pots, in cauldrons, and in pans, and carried them quickly to all the lay people. ¹⁴Afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests , because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were busy offering the burnt offerings and the fat portions until nightfall. Therefore, the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron. ¹⁵The singers, the sons of Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the gatekeepers were at every gate. They did not need to depart from their service, because their brothers the Levites prepared for them. ¹⁶So all the service of Yahweh was prepared on that day, to celebrate the Passover and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of Yahweh, according to the command of King Josiah. ¹⁷The Israelites who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days. ¹⁸No Passover like it had been celebrated in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet; none of the kings of Israel had celebrated such a Passover as Josiah celebrated with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁹In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah, this Passover was celebrated. ²⁰After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Neco king of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to engage him. ²¹But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is there between me and you, king of Judah? I am not coming against you today, but against the house with which I am at war, and God has commanded me to hurry. Stop opposing God, who is with me, so that he does not destroy you.” ²²Nevertheless, Josiah would not turn away from him, but disguised himself in order to fight him. He did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. ²³The archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am severely wounded.” ²⁴So his servants took him out of the chariot and put him in his second chariot, and they brought him to Jerusalem. There he died, and he was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. ²⁵Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and all the male and female singers speak of Josiah in their lamentations to this day. They made them an ordinance in Israel, and behold, they are recorded in the Lamentations. ²⁶Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of faithful love, according to what is written in the law of Yahweh, ²⁷and his acts, from first to last , behold, they are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
