2 Chronicles 2:1-18 — Preparations for Building the Temple

2Chr.2.1-18

¹Now Solomon resolved to build a house for the name of Yahweh and a house for his kingdom. ²Then Solomon counted seventy thousand load-bearers, eighty thousand quarrymen in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors over them. ³Solomon sent to Huram king of Tyre, saying, "As you dealt with David my father and sent him cedars to build himself a house to dwell in, so deal with me. ⁴"Behold, I am building a house for the name of Yahweh my God, to consecrate it to him, to burn before him incense of sweet spices, for the continual arrangement of showbread, and for burnt offerings morning and evening, on the Sabbaths, at the New Moons, and at the appointed feasts of Yahweh our God. This is a permanent obligation for Israel. ⁵The house that I am building will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. ⁶But who has power to build him a house, since heaven, even the heaven of heavens, cannot contain him? And who am I, that I should build him a house, except to burn incense before him? ⁷And now send me a skillful man to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, purple, crimson, and blue, and who knows how to engrave engravings, to be with the skillful men who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, whom David my father prepared. ⁸Send me also cedar, cypress, and algum timber from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon. And behold, my servants will be with your servants ⁹to prepare timber for me in abundance, for the house that I am building will be great and wonderful. ¹⁰And behold, for your servants, the woodcutters who cut the timber, I will give twenty thousand cors of crushed wheat, twenty thousand cors of barley, twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil." ¹¹Then Huram king of Tyre answered in a letter and sent it to Solomon: “Because Yahweh loves his people, he has made you king over them.” ¹²Huram also said, "Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, knowing discretion and understanding, who will build a house for Yahweh and a house for his kingdom. ¹³So now I am sending a skillful man, endowed with understanding, Huram-abi , ¹⁴the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan, though his father was a man of Tyre. He knows how to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, wood, purple, blue, fine linen, and crimson, and how to engrave every engraving and devise every design that may be assigned to him, to work with your skillful men and with the skillful men of my lord David your father. ¹⁵"And now let my lord send to his servants the wheat, the barley, the oil, and the wine of which he spoke. ¹⁶We will cut wood from Lebanon, as much as you need, and will bring it to you in rafts by sea to Joppa, and you shall take it up to Jerusalem." ¹⁷Then Solomon counted all the resident foreigners who were in the land of Israel, after the census that David his father had taken of them, and they were found to be 153,600. ¹⁸He made seventy thousand of them load-bearers, eighty thousand quarrymen in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors to direct the people at their work.
