1 Timothy 5:1-16 — About Widows, Elders, and Slaves

1Tim.5.1-16

¹Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father, and appeal to younger men as brothers, ²appeal to older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, in all purity. ³Honor widows who are truly widows. ⁴But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety to their own household and to repay their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. ⁵Now the one who is truly a widow and left all alone has set her hope on God and continues in petitions and prayers night and day. ⁶But she who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. ⁷Command these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. ⁸But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for his household members, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. ⁹Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years old, the wife of one husband, ¹⁰well attested in good works: if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted the afflicted, if she has devoted herself to every good work. ¹¹But refuse to enroll younger widows; for when their sensual desires draw them away from Christ, they want to marry, ¹²incurring judgment because they have set aside their first pledge. ¹³And at the same time they also learn to be idle, going around from house to house; and not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to say. ¹⁴Therefore I want younger widows to marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander; ¹⁵for some have already turned aside after Satan. ¹⁶If any believing woman has widows , let her support them, and do not let the church be burdened, so that it may support those who are truly widows.
