Proverbs 20:1-30 — Proverbs of Solomon
Prov.20.1-30
1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler , and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. 2The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his own life. 3It is an honor for a man to cease from strife, but every fool will quarrel. 4The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will beg at the harvest and have nothing. 5Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. 6Many a man will proclaim his own loyal love, but a faithful man, who can find? 7The righteous walks in his integrity; blessed are his children after him. 8A king sitting on the throne of judgment winnows out all evil with his eyes. 9Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”? 10Differing weights and differing measures—both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD. 11Even a young man makes himself known by his actions, whether his conduct is pure and whether it is upright. 12The hearing ear and the seeing eye—the LORD has made them both. 13Do not love sleep, lest you become poor; open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. 14“Bad, bad!” says the buyer, but when he goes his way, then he boasts. 15There is gold and an abundance of rubies, but lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. 16Take his garment, for he has posted security for a stranger; and hold it in pledge for a foreign woman. 17Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel. 18Plans are established by counsel, and by wise guidance wage war. 19He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a babbler. 20Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the deepest darkness. 21An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed in the end. 22Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the LORD, and he will save you. 23Differing weights are an abomination to the LORD, and dishonest scales are not good. 24A man's steps are from the LORD; how then can a person understand his own way? 25It is a trap for a man to rashly declare something holy, and only after making vows to reconsider. 26A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them. 27The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts. 28Loyal love and faithfulness preserve the king, and his throne is upheld by loyal love. 29The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray hair. 30Bruises and wounds scour away evil , and beatings cleanse the innermost parts.
