Judges 12:1-7Jephthah and Ephraim

Judg.12.1-7
1The men of Ephraim were summoned together and crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the sons of Ammon and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down over you with fire!” 2Jephthah said to them, "I and my people were in a great conflict with the sons of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand. 3When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over against the sons of Ammon, and Yahweh gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?" 4Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck down Ephraim because they had said, “You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim, living in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasseh.” 5Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim. And whenever a fugitive of Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,” 6they would say to him, “Please say 'Shibboleth .'” And he would say, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they would seize him and slaughter him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time, forty-two thousand from Ephraim fell. 7Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and he was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
