Hosea 9:1-17 — Punishment for Israel

Hos.9.1-17

¹Do not rejoice, Israel, with rejoicing like the peoples, for you have committed harlotry, departing from your God; you have loved a harlot's wages on every threshing floor of grain. ²The threshing floor and the winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail her. ³They will not dwell in the land of the LORD, but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria. ⁴They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not be pleasing to Him. They will be like the bread of mourners to them; all who eat of it will be defiled. For their bread will be for their own appetite; it will not enter the house of the LORD. ⁵What will you do on the day of the appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the LORD? ⁶For behold, they have gone away from destruction; Egypt will gather them, Memphis will bury them. As for their precious things of silver, nettles will possess them; thorns will be in their tents. ⁷The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have come. Let Israel know it! The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is insane, because of the abundance of your iniquity and great hostility. ⁸The watchman of Ephraim is with my God; but the prophet is a fowler's snare on all his ways, and hostility is in the house of his God. ⁹They have gone deep in corrupting themselves, as in the days of Gibeah . He will remember their iniquity; He will punish their sins. ¹⁰I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers like the first ripe fruit on a fig tree in its first season. But they came to Baal-Peor and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became as detestable as that which they loved. ¹¹As for Ephraim, their glory will fly away like a bird; there will be no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception. ¹²Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them until not a man is left. For indeed, woe to them when I turn away from them! ¹³Ephraim, as I have seen, is like Tyre, planted in a pleasant meadow; but Ephraim will bring out his children to the slayer. ¹⁴Give them, O LORD—what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. ¹⁵All their evil is in Gilgal, for there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds I will drive them out of My house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels. ¹⁶Ephraim is struck down; their root is dried up, they will bear no fruit. Even if they give birth, I will put to death the precious ones of their womb. ¹⁷My God will reject them, because they have not listened to Him; and they will be wanderers among the nations.
