Hosea 2:1-23 — Israel Punished and Restored
Hos.2.1-23
1Yet the number of the children of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or counted. And in the place where it is said to them, “You are not my people,” it will be said to them, “Children of the living God.” 2Then the children of Judah and the children of Israel will gather together, and they will appoint for themselves one head, and they will go up from the land; for great is the day of Jezreel . 3Say to your brothers, “My People,” and to your sisters, “Shown Compassion.” 4Plead with your mother, plead, for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove her prostitutions from her face and her adulteries from between her breasts. 5Otherwise I will strip her naked and set her out as on the day of her birth. I will make her like the wilderness, turn her into a parched land, and let her die of thirst. 6And I will not show compassion to her children, because they are children of prostitution. 7For their mother has prostituted herself; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, “I will go after my lovers, the ones who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.” 8Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths. 9She will pursue her lovers but not overtake them; she will seek them but not find them. Then she will say, “I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than it is now.” 10But she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain and the new wine and the oil, and who multiplied silver and gold for her, which they made into things for Baal. 11Therefore I will return and take away my grain in its time and my new wine in its season, and I will take back my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness. 12And now I will expose her indecency before the eyes of her lovers, and no one will rescue her out of my hand. 13I will put an end to all her rejoicing, her feast days, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed festivals. 14I will lay waste her vine and her fig tree, of which she said, “These are my wages that my lovers gave me.” I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field will devour them. 15And I will punish her for the days of the Baals, when she burned incense to them and adorned herself with her ring and her jewelry and went after her lovers, but forgot me, declares YHWH. 16Therefore, behold, I will allure her and lead her into the wilderness, and I will speak to her heart. 17And from there I will give her her vineyards, and the Valley of Achor as a doorway of hope. There she will answer as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt. 18And in that day, declares YHWH, you will call me “my husband,” and you will no longer call me “my master.” 19I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will be remembered by their name no more. 20And in that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, with the birds of the heavens, and with the creeping things of the ground. Bow and sword and war I will break from the land, and I will make them lie down in safety. 21And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in compassion. 22I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you will know YHWH. 23And in that day I will answer, declares YHWH; I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth.
