Hosea 10:1-15Israel's Sin and Captivity

Hos.10.1-15
1Israel is a spreading vine, yielding fruit for himself. According to the abundance of his fruit, he multiplied his altars; according to the goodness of his land, they made beautiful sacred pillars. 2Their heart is divided; now they must bear their guilt. He will break down their altars; he will destroy their sacred pillars. 3For now they will say, “We have no king, for we do not fear Yahweh; and the king, what can he do for us?” 4They speak mere words, swearing falsely, making covenants; therefore judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field. 5The inhabitants of Samaria will fear for the calves of Beth-aven. Indeed, its people will mourn over it, along with its idolatrous priests who rejoiced over it, for its glory, because it has departed from it. 6It also will be carried to Assyria as a tribute to King Jareb. Ephraim will receive shame, and Israel will be ashamed of its own counsel. 7Samaria and her king will be destroyed, like a twig on the surface of the water. 8The high places of Aven , the sin of Israel, will be destroyed. Thorns and thistles will grow up on their altars. And they will say to the mountains , “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!” 9From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; there they have remained. Will not the battle in Gibeah against the sons of iniquity overtake them? 10When I desire, I will discipline them; and the nations will be gathered against them, when they are bound for their two transgressions. 11Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh, but I will place a yoke on her beautiful neck. I will harness Ephraim; Judah will plow; Jacob will break his clods. 12Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap according to steadfast love. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek Yahweh, until he comes and rains righteousness upon you. 13You have plowed wickedness; you have reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way, in the multitude of your mighty men, 14therefore the roar of battle will rise against your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle, when mothers were dashed to pieces with their children. 15Thus it will be done to you, O Bethel , because of your great wickedness. At dawn the king of Israel will be utterly destroyed .
