Nehemiah 6:1-19Further Opposition; The Wall Completed

Neh.6.1-19
1Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and that no breach remained in it—though up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates— 2Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they were planning to do me harm. 3So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” 4They sent me this same message four times, and I gave them this same reply. 5Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his servant to me with this same message, with an open letter in his hand. 6In it was written: "It is reported among the nations—and Gashmu says it—that you and the Jews are planning to rebel, and that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports, you are to become their king. 7You have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, saying, 'There is a king in Judah!' Now these reports will be heard by the king. So come now, and let us take counsel together." 8Then I sent a message to him, saying, “No such things as you are saying have been done, but you are inventing them out of your own mind.” 9For they were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands. 10Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said, “Let us meet together at the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they are coming to kill you.” 11But I said, “Should a man like me flee? And who is there like me who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!” 12Then I realized that God had certainly not sent him, but he had spoken this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13He was hired for this purpose: so that I would be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so that they would have a bad report about me, in order to reproach me. 14Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these works of theirs, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who were trying to frighten me. 15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul , in fifty-two days. 16When all our enemies heard about it, all the nations around us were afraid and lost their confidence greatly, for they realized that this work had been accomplished by our God. 17Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and letters from Tobiah were coming to them. 18For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah. 19Moreover, they kept reporting his good deeds in my presence, and they kept relaying my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.
