Nehemiah 10:1-39 — The Agreement of the People

¹In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement in writing, and on the sealed document are our leaders, our Levites, and our priests. ²And on the sealed document were Nehemiah the governor , son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah; ³Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah; ⁴Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah; ⁵Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch; ⁶Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah; ⁷Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch; ⁸Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin; ⁹Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah. These were the priests. ¹⁰And the Levites: Jeshua son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel; ¹¹and their brothers: Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan; ¹²Mica, Rehob, Hashabiah; ¹³Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah; ¹⁴Hodiah, Bani, Beninu. ¹⁵The heads of the people: Parosh, Pahath-moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani; ¹⁶Bunni, Azgad, Bebai; ¹⁷Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin; ¹⁸Ater, Hezekiah, Azzur; ¹⁹Hodiah, Hashum, Bezai; ²⁰Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai; ²¹Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir; ²²Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua; ²³Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah; ²⁴Hoshea, Hananiah, Hasshub; ²⁵Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek; ²⁶Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah; ²⁷Ahijah, Hanan, Anan; ²⁸Malluch, Harim, Baanah. ²⁹And the rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, together with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all who had knowledge and understanding— ³⁰join with their brothers, their nobles, and enter into a curse and an oath : to walk in the Law of God, which was given through Moses the servant of God, and to keep and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, along with His ordinances and statutes. ³¹And we will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land, and we will not take their daughters for our sons. ³²And if the peoples of the land bring goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day. We will forgo the seventh year and every debt claim. ³³We also laid obligations on ourselves, to give yearly one-third of a shekel for the service of the house of our God: ³⁴for the showbread, the regular grain offering, the regular burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the new moons, the appointed feasts, the holy things, the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and all the work of the house of our God. ³⁵We cast lots—the priests, the Levites, and the people—for the wood offering, to bring it to the house of our God by our fathers' houses at appointed times year by year, to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law. ³⁶And to bring the firstfruits of our land and the firstfruits of all the fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the LORD; ³⁷also the firstborn of our sons and of our livestock, as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God. ³⁸And we will bring the first of our dough, our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the new wine, and the oil to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithe of our land to the Levites, for they, the Levites, are the ones who collect the tithes in all the towns where we labor. ³⁹And a priest, a son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes, and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the storerooms of the storehouse.
