Lamentations 2:1-22 — God's Anger Against Zion
Lam.2.1-22
1How the Lord in his anger has darkened Daughter of Zion with a cloud! He has cast the glory of Israel from heaven to earth, and in the day of his anger he did not remember his footstool . 2The Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob without sparing. In his fury he has torn down the fortresses of Daughter Judah; he has brought her kingdom and its princes down to the ground and profaned them. 3In burning anger he has cut off every horn of Israel; he has drawn back his right hand before the enemy, and he has burned against Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it. 4He has bent his bow like an enemy; his right hand stood like a foe. He killed all who were delightful to the eye; in the tent of Daughter of Zion he poured out his fury like fire. 5The Lord has become like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed its strongholds, and in Daughter Judah he has multiplied mourning and lamentation. 6He has violently torn down his shelter like a garden booth; he has destroyed his appointed meeting place. The LORD has made feast and Sabbath be forgotten in Zion, and in the fury of his anger he has rejected king and priest. 7The Lord has rejected his altar; he has spurned his sanctuary. He has given the walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy; they have raised a shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast. 8The LORD planned to destroy the wall of Daughter of Zion; he stretched out a measuring line and did not draw back his hand from destroying. He made rampart and wall mourn; together they languish. 9Her gates have sunk into the earth; he has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the nations; there is no law, and even her prophets find no vision from the LORD. 10The elders of Daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem have lowered their heads to the ground. 11My eyes are worn out with tears; my insides churn; my inmost being is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city. 12They say to their mothers, 'Where is grain and wine ?' as they faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as their life is poured out in their mothers' embrace. 13What can I say for you? To what can I compare you, daughter Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, virgin Daughter of Zion? For your ruin is as vast as the sea; who can heal you? 14Your prophets saw for you false and foolish visions; they did not expose your iniquity so as to restore your fortunes, but they saw for you false oracles and delusions. 15All who pass by the way clap their hands over you; they hiss and shake their heads over Daughter Jerusalem: 'Is this the city of which they said, “The perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth”?' 16All your enemies have opened their mouths against you; they hiss and gnash their teeth. They say, 'We have swallowed her up! Surely this is the day we hoped for; we have found it, we have seen it.' 17The LORD has done what he planned; he has carried out his word, which he commanded from days of old. He has torn down and not spared; he has made the enemy rejoice over you and exalted the horn of your foes. 18Their heart cried out to the Lord: O wall of Daughter of Zion, let your tears run down like a torrent day and night; give yourself no relief, and let your eyes know no rest. 19Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches; pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at the head of every street. 20Look, O LORD, and see: to whom have you done this? Should women eat their own offspring, the children they have nurtured? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord? 21Young and old lie on the ground in the streets; my young women and my young men have fallen by the sword. You killed them in the day of your anger; you slaughtered them without sparing. 22You summoned, as on a feast day, those I dread from every side; in the day of the LORD's anger there was not one who escaped or survived. Those whom I nurtured and reared, my enemy destroyed.
