Lamentations 1:1-22Jerusalem's Misery

Lam.1.1-22
1How she sits alone, the city once full of people! She has become like a widow, she who was great among the nations. The princess among the provinces has become a slave for forced labor. 2She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no comforter. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies. 3Judah has gone into exile under affliction and harsh servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no resting place. All her pursuers have overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4The roads to Zion mourn, because no one comes to the appointed feasts. All her gates are desolate; her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she herself is in bitter anguish. 5Her adversaries have become the head, her enemies prosper; for the LORD has afflicted her because of the multitude of her transgressions. Her young children have gone into captivity before the adversary. 6All her splendor has departed from the daughter of Zion. Her princes have become like deer that find no pasture; they have fled without strength before the pursuer. 7Jerusalem remembers, in the days of her affliction and wandering, all her precious things that were from days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and she had no helper, the adversaries saw her and mocked at her downfall. 8Jerusalem has sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of scorn. All who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself also groans and turns away. 9Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she did not consider her future. Therefore her downfall was astonishing; she has no comforter. “Look, O LORD, upon my affliction, for the enemy has magnified himself!” 10The adversary has spread out his hand over all her precious things; for she has seen the nations enter her sanctuary, those whom you commanded that they should not enter your assembly. 11All her people groan as they seek bread; they have given their precious things for food to restore their lives. “Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become despised.” 12"Is it nothing to you , all you who pass by on the road? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was inflicted upon me, with which the LORD has afflicted me on the day of his fierce anger. 13"From on high he sent fire into my bones, and it overpowered them; he spread a net for my feet, he turned me back. He has made me desolate, faint all the day long. 14"The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; they are woven together, they have come up upon my neck; he has made my strength fail. The Lord has delivered me into the hands of those against whom I cannot stand. 15"The Lord has rejected all my mighty men in my midst; he has summoned an assembly against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trodden the virgin daughter of Judah as in a winepress. 16“For these things I weep; my eyes, my eyes flow with water, because a comforter who could restore my soul is far from me. My children are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed.” 17Zion stretches out her hands, but she has no comforter. The LORD has commanded concerning Jacob that his neighbors should be his adversaries; Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them. 18"The LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled against his word. Listen, please, all you peoples, and see my sorrow! My young women and my young men have gone into captivity. 19"I called to my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders perished in the city, while they sought food for themselves to restore their lives. 20"Look, O LORD, for I am in distress; my stomach churns. My heart is overturned within me, for I have been very rebellious. Outside, the sword bereaves; inside the house, it is like death. 21"They have heard that I groan, yet there is no comforter for me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they rejoice that you have done it. Bring the day that you have proclaimed, so that they may become like me! 22“Let all their wickedness come before you , and deal with them just as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions. For my groans are many, and my heart is faint.”
