Amos 6:1-14 — Woe to the Complacent

Amos.6.1-14

¹Woe to those who are complacent in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the distinguished men of the foremost of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes! ²Cross over to Calneh and see, and go from there to Hamath the great, and go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory larger than your territory? ³You who put far away the evil day, and bring near a reign of violence; ⁴who lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge upon their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the midst of the stall; ⁵who strum to the sound of the harp, and like David invent for themselves instruments of music; ⁶who drink wine from sacrificial bowls , and anoint themselves with the finest of oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! ⁷Therefore they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles, and the feasting of those who lounge will pass away. ⁸The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself—this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Hosts: “I abhor the pride of Jacob , and I hate his citadels; therefore I will deliver up the city and all that fills it.” ⁹And it will come to pass, if ten men remain in one house, they will die. ¹⁰And when a man's relative, the one who is to burn his body , picks him up to bring the bones out of the house, and says to the one in the innermost parts of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” he will say, “No one.” Then he will say, “Hush! For we must not mention the name of the LORD.” ¹¹For behold, the LORD commands, and He will strike the great house into pieces, and the small house into rubble. ¹²Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood— ¹³you who rejoice in Lo-debar , who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves by our own strength?” ¹⁴“For behold, I am raising up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Hosts; “and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah .”
