Amos 1:3-2:16 — Judgment on Israel's Neighbors and Israel

Amos.1.3-2.16

³Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron. ⁴So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael, and it will devour the citadels of Ben-hadad. ⁵I will break the bar of Damascus , cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven and the one who holds the scepter from Beth-eden; and the people of Aram will go into exile to Kir," says the LORD. ⁶Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they carried an entire population into exile to hand them over to Edom. ⁷So I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it will devour its citadels. ⁸I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon. I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish," says the Lord GOD. ⁹Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they handed over an entire population to Edom and did not remember a covenant of brotherhood. ¹⁰So I will send fire upon the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its citadels." ¹¹Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and destroyed his compassion; his anger kept tearing continually, and he kept his wrath forever. ¹²So I will send fire upon Teman, and it will devour the citadels of Bozrah." ¹³Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their border. ¹⁴So I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour its citadels, amid a battle cry on the day of battle, amid a storm on the day of whirlwind. ¹⁵Their king will go into exile, he and his princes together," says the LORD.

Chapter 2

¹Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime. ²So I will send fire upon Moab, and it will devour the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die amid tumult, amid shouting, and amid the sound of the horn. ³I will cut off the judge from its midst, and I will kill all its princes with him," says the LORD. ⁴Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they rejected the law of the LORD and did not keep his statutes, and their lies led them astray, after which their fathers walked. ⁵So I will send fire upon Judah, and it will devour the citadels of Jerusalem." ⁶Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals. ⁷They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the humble; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that they profane my holy name. ⁸They stretch themselves out beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their god they drink the wine of those who have been fined. ⁹Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of cedars and who was strong like the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath. ¹⁰And it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you in the wilderness forty years, to possess the land of the Amorite. ¹¹I raised up some of your sons as prophets and some of your young men as Nazirites. Is this not so, O children of Israel?" declares the LORD. ¹²"But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and you commanded the prophets, saying, 'You shall not prophesy.' ¹³Look, I will press you down where you stand , as a cart full of sheaves presses down. ¹⁴Flight will perish from the swift, the strong will not muster his strength, and the mighty will not save his life. ¹⁵The archer will not stand, the swift-footed will not escape, and the horseman will not save his life. ¹⁶Even the courageous of heart among the warriors will flee naked on that day," declares the LORD.
