Jonah 4:1-11 — Jonah's Anger; God's Compassion
Jonah.4.1-11
1But this was greatly displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. 2So he prayed to the LORD and said, "O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled beforehand to Tarshish. For I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live." 4And the LORD said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city. He made a shelter for himself there and sat under it in the shade, until he could see what would happen to the city. 6And the LORD God appointed a plant, and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort . And Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 7But at dawn the next day, God appointed a worm, and it attacked the plant so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He asked that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “It is right for me to be angry, even to death!” 10And the LORD said, "You had compassion on the plant, for which you did not labor and which you did not make grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11But as for me, should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much livestock?"
