Ezra 10:1-44 — The People's Confession; Those Guilty of Intermarriage
Ezra.10.1-44
1While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and throwing himself down before the Temple of God, a very large assembly from Israel gathered around him—men, women, and children—for the people were weeping bitterly. 2Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign wives from the peoples of the land. Yet even now there is hope for Israel in this matter. 3So now let us make a covenant with our God to send away all these wives and those born to them, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. 4Rise up, for this matter rests on you, and we are with you. Be strong and do it." 5Then Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do according to this word, and they swore. 6Then Ezra withdrew from before the Temple of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He went there, but he ate no bread and drank no water, because he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles. 7And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles should gather at Jerusalem. 8Whoever did not come within three days, according to the counsel of the officials and the elders, would have all his property forfeited, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of the exiles. 9So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month , on the twentieth day of the month, and all the people sat in the square before the Temple of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. 10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11Now therefore make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives." 12Then the whole assembly answered with a loud voice, "Yes, it is our duty to do as you have said. 13But the people are many, and it is the rainy season. We are not able to stand outside, and this is not the work of one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter. 14Let our officials stand for the whole assembly, and let everyone in our cities who has married foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the burning anger of our God over this matter is turned away from us." 15Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them. 16And the exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of fathers' houses, according to their fathers' houses, all of them designated by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter. 17By the first day of the first month they had finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign wives. 18Among the sons of the priests who had married foreign wives were found these from the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19They gave their pledge to send away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram from the flock for their guilt. 20From the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah. 21From the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah. 22From the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah. 23And from the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita) , Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. 24From the singers: Eliashib.
