Ezra 1:1-11 — Cyrus Helps the Exiles Return
Ezra.1.1-11
1In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in a written document, saying: 2“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has appointed me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. 3Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel—he is the God who is in Jerusalem. 4And let every survivor, in whatever place he resides, be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, along with a freewill offering for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.” 5Then the heads of the fathers' households of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites—everyone whose spirit God had stirred—rose up to go up and build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem. 6And all those around them supported them with articles of silver, with gold, with goods, with livestock, and with valuables, besides all that was willingly offered. 7King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought out from Jerusalem and placed in the house of his gods. 8Cyrus king of Persia brought them out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and he counted them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah. 9And this was their number: thirty gold dishes, one thousand silver dishes, twenty-nine knives, 10thirty gold bowls, four hundred ten silver bowls of a second sort, and one thousand other articles. 11All the articles of gold and silver were five thousand four hundred . Sheshbazzar brought them all up when the exiles were brought up from Babylon to Jerusalem.
