2 Samuel 10:1-19 — David Defeats the Ammonites
2Sam.10.1-19
1After this, the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent his servants to comfort him concerning his father, and David's servants came into the land of the Ammonites. 3But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you really think David is honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Hasn't David sent his servants to you to search the city, spy it out, and overthrow it?” 4So Hanun took David's servants, shaved off half of each man's beard, cut their garments in half up to their buttocks , and sent them away. 5When David was told, he sent to meet them, because the men were deeply humiliated. And the king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown back; then return.” 6When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, they sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-rehob and the Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand foot soldiers, along with the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men. 7When David heard of it, he sent Joab and the whole army of the mighty men. 8The Ammonites came out and drew up for battle at the entrance of the gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open field. 9When Joab saw that the battle line was against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and drew them up against the Arameans. 10He placed the rest of the troops under the command of Abishai his brother, and he drew them up against the Ammonites. 11And he said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you must help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.” 12Be strong, and let us show ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And the LORD will do what is good in his sight. 13So Joab and the people who were with him advanced to battle against the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem. 15When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans from beyond the River, and they came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. 17When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans drew up to meet David and fought against him. 18And the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Arameans and forty thousand horsemen . He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. 19When all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
