1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:13 — Paul's Longing to See Them; Timothy's Report

1Thess.2.17-3.13

¹⁷But we, brothers, having been torn away from you for a short time—in person, not in heart—made every effort all the more to see your face with great desire. ¹⁸Because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, more than once—but Satan hindered us. ¹⁹For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting—is it not even you?—before our Lord Jesus at his coming? ²⁰For you are our glory and joy.

Chapter 3

¹Therefore, when we could endure it no longer, we were pleased to be left behind in Athens alone, ²and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the gospel of Christ, in order to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, ³so that no one would be unsettled by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. ⁴For indeed, when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were going to suffer affliction, just as it also came to pass and you know. ⁵For this reason, when I also could endure it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor might have been in vain. ⁶But now, when Timothy came to us from you and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good memories of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you— ⁷for this reason, brothers, we were encouraged about you in all our distress and affliction, because of your faith. ⁸For now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord. ⁹For what thanksgiving can we return to God concerning you, for all the joy with which we rejoice because of you before our God, ¹⁰night and day praying most earnestly that we may see your face and supply what is lacking in your faith? ¹¹Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus , direct our way to you; ¹²and may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we also do for you, ¹³so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones .
