1 Samuel 7:1-17Samuel Subdues the Philistines

1Sam.7.1-17
1Then the men of Kiriath Jearim came and brought up the ark of the LORD. They brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and they consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD. 2From the day the ark remained at Kiriath Jearim, a long time passed—twenty years—and all the house of Israel yearned for the LORD. 3And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, direct your hearts to the LORD, and serve him alone; then he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served the LORD alone. 5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you.” 6So they gathered at Mizpah, drew water and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted that day. There they said, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. 7When the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9Then Samuel took one nursing lamb and offered it up as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. Samuel cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him. 10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel. But on that day the LORD thundered with a mighty voice against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were struck down before Israel. 11Then the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and struck them down as far as below Beth-car. 12Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and he called its name Eben-Ezer , saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” 13So the Philistines were subdued and no longer came into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14The cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron as far as Gath. Israel also recovered their territory from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. 15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. 16Year after year he would go on circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places. 17And his return was to Ramah, because his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar to the LORD.
