Esther 9:1-19 — The Triumph of the Jews
Esth.9.1-19
1Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of it, when the king's word and his edict were due to be carried out, on the very day when the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, it turned out the opposite: the Jews themselves overpowered those who hated them. 2The Jews gathered in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. No one could stand before them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the peoples. 3All the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and those who carried out the king's business supported the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. 4For Mordecai was great in the king's palace, and word about him spread through all the provinces, because the man Mordecai was becoming greater and greater. 5The Jews struck all their enemies with the sword, with slaughter and destruction, and they did to those who hated them as they pleased. 6In Susa the citadel, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men. 7Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, 8Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, 9Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha, 10the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews. They killed them, but they did not lay a hand on the plunder. 11On that day the number of those killed in Susa the citadel was reported before the king. 12The king said to Queen Esther, “In Susa the citadel the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, as well as the ten sons of Haman. What, then, have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. And what is your further request? It shall be done.” 13Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let the Jews who are in Susa be allowed tomorrow also to do according to today's edict, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged on the gallows .” 14So the king commanded that this be done, and an edict was issued in Susa, and Haman's ten sons were hanged. 15The Jews who were in Susa gathered also on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they killed three hundred men in Susa, but they did not lay a hand on the plunder. 16The rest of the Jews who were in the king's provinces also gathered and defended their lives, gaining relief from their enemies and killing seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder. 17This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day of it they rested and made it a day of feasting and joy. 18But the Jews who were in Susa gathered on the thirteenth day of it and on the fourteenth day of it, and on the fifteenth day of it they rested and made it a day of feasting and joy. 19That is why the rural Jews, who live in unwalled towns, observe the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day of joy and feasting, a holiday, and a day of sending gifts to one another .
